Writing is something that is inside most people. People just let it out in different ways. Art, Poetry, Novels, Blogs, and Websites are just somethings that people focus that attention on. Here are two habits to get you writing no matter what you want to focus your attention on.
Just start writing.
The biggest hurdle people have in writing is just that writing. How many times have you stared at a blank computer screen hoping that the words will just start to flow? You are not alone.
The first habit is to simply write. If you are trying to develop the habit of writing, just write. Pick the same time and place every day. Plan your day and routine around writing at this time of the day.
What time is this? That is a question for you to answer. The best time to write is different for every person. I am lucky enough that my children are all in school. My best time to write is first thing in the morning after everyone is gone and the house is quiet. If you can’t get this may be a better time would be when your little ones go down for a nap. You could even pick bedtime as a time to write. I do not like doing this because I have the habit of writing all night. No one wants to sleep past school times.
Being a freelance writer for over ten years I got into the same routine day in and day out. When I was doing paid work it was that time of the day that I did it. Even if I did not have any paid work at that moment I did not slack. I write at that time of the day even if it is creative writing. If you are a novelist or author your best time of the day is when your creative juices are flowing the best.
Freelance writing at its best was when the orders were coming in. I choose the time that best suited both the orders and my ability to get them done in a timely fashion. Blog writers might have this concern but, if you are writing just for your own website then it might be best to write like an author.
The best thing to remember is to just write! It doesn’t matter if you finish writing. The act of accessing those portions of your brain at the same time of the day can help you down the road when you need those juices to flow.
Try to do this for at least 7 days in a row. If you want to habit to be a permanent aim for writing at the same time every day for a month. The human brain is teachable even if you are the one teaching yourself a new habit.
READ. READ. READ.
If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot. There’s no way around these two things that I’m aware of, no shortcut -Stephen King.
Reading is the best way to start or improve your writing. If you are a blogger than read other people’s blogs that are in the niche that you are writing in. If you are an author read books from the authors in your field. That way you can get familiar with the writings and styles of people that might be making more money than you. If you are already making more money than them then you might get a feel for different styles and types that your customers are wanting and reading.
Exploring new styles and genres that you can then incorporate into your own writing styles. This can help writers of all varieties. I read all of the time but, what I change is from what genre I do read. I read books and blogs that might help me here and then I read others that might help me in writing my own book.
Do not read from just one source. Take in as much information from as many sources as you can handle. Variety is the spice of good writing.
Lastly, as Stay at home dads, we do not have a lot of free time on our hands. Time management is the biggest key but, that is a topic for a post all by itself. Until you get the time management down you might have to use some tools of the trade to get your writing done.
Voice to text applications. There are more of these than I could mention. These can be a handy tool to get your thoughts quickly out of your mind and onto the screen. They are not perfect but, after you get the thoughts onto paper you can then go back to it when you have time. You can fine-tune the thoughts and write them down in the proper form.
If writing is important to you or your business then make time to write. Find a time and place that allows your creative urges to come forth and write there. You need to form the habits that will allow you to grow further in your writings.
