Book Review: The One Thing. The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results.

Time is the one thing that we can’t have enough of. As stay at home dads and parents we surely need more time. Or we can all learn to manage what time we do have better. The One Thing. The Surprisingly Simple Extraordinary Results By: Gary Keller with Jay Papasan. Is a great book for any of us to read.

Gary Keller details a system of time management. He details specific things that you and I can do to achieve a workable system of time management. That is the biggest difference between this system and others like it. This book details a step by step system to give yourself more time.

It isn’t about creating a lot of time. We all know that you can’t create time. What we can do is use the time we have more wisely. The biggest thing is to stick to the system. That is the most important thing about the book.

It isn’t what you have to do though. When I read a book like this I am asking myself these questions.

  1. Is this system the right one for me?
  2. Can I perform this system fully and to the best of my ability?

Is this system right for me?

Well, only you can answer that for yourself. I did answer that. This book has an ultra detailed system that you can follow down to the letter to manage your time better. That was not possible for me.

What I was able to do was take the main principle of this book “The One Thing”, and incorporate this principle into my daily life. The one thing was what you focus your time one. It is better to focus your attention on one thing and get that mission completed than it is to divide your attention between numerous things

Can I perform this system fully and to the best of my ability?

That is the great thing about this book. Without spoiling the book entirely, you can follow this book cover to cover and he details a simple system of how to focus your attention. He even goes over a lot of things you are probably doing wrong with your system that you are using now.

Blocking off your time.

Part of managing your time is being able to block off you time. This book goes over all of this is good detail. What you have to remember to do is to stick with your plan and blocks. Do not allow anyone or anything to disturb the plan you have put into place.

There is the downfall I see with this system. It might not be a system for everyone. I think this book is geared more toward single people or people without children. That does not mean there is nothing in this book that you can walk away with. My answer is, yes. There is a lot in this book that you can still walk away with.

Just because we have kids doesn’t mean that we do not have time to start this system. Time blocking and focusing our attention on what our one thing is will help us save time and focus our attention on what needs to be done.

The book can also help you to answer what it is that you can focus on. I know that is not always as clear as it should be. This book can guide you in the proper way of finding the answer to that questions.

Gary Keller quotes Josh Billings in this book saying. “Be like a postage stamp. Stick to one thing until you get there.” That sums up this entire book and entire system in one quote.

I think that this book is a good read for any parent. Especially those stay at home dads that need to do three or four things each and everyday.
