Survival Series Part Three: Fire Basics.

In the modern world of heat at the touch of a button and stoves that cook our food for us, we often take fire for granted. Fire, after all, is the most important of all survival tools. Fire alone lets you cook your food, stave off hypothermia, light up an area, and ward off predators. All of these factors make it one of the best skills you can master. It is important to master it safely as well. Anytime you decide to practice making fire you have to make sure you do it safely.

If you find yourself in a survival situation fire is going to be a priority. The ability to make fire has to many benefits to discount it. Making a fire in an emergency is not about rubbing sticks together. It is about making a fire because your life depends on it. Primitive fire methods have their place and time but, when your life depends on it is not the time. This is when you need a means of a flame. Items like a bic lighter, stormproof matches, and butane lighters are among the first choices to carry a means of a ready flame.

There are other choices than those mentioned here and these choices are riddled with their own issues and problems. The method of producing a flame in an emergency is enough to warrant carrying these items instead of carrying sparking devices.

The easiest way to accomplish carrying a method of ready flame with you is to incorporate it all into your everyday carry. Adding a bic lighter into your pocket would give you the ability to create a ready flame. Another option is to simply stash a couple of matches in your wallet. This will allow you to make an emergency fire when it is required in an emergency but, you will not have to carry a lighter when you do not use it every day. Any way you want to carry it, carry a means of flame on your person. Fire is important enough to the survival of you and your family that it is imperative that you should be able to make one at a minutes notice.

Matches. There are several styles and varieties that you can choose from. They range from strike anywhere matches all the way to windproof waterproof matches. I highly suggest carrying a variety of all of them.

Bic Lighter/Butane Lighters. This category is the primary means of producing a ready flame. It is highly useful for everyday uses like lighting candles, BBq grills, and incense. Along with that having a means of ready flame like a lighter can mean you can create a fire whenever a survival situation would surface.

Tinder. Tinder is the second most important thing that you need to have access to. Having a means of creating a flame also means you need something to carry that flame to a fire lay. Having a fine properly prepared tinder also means that you will be able to create a fire with sparking devices along with lighters.

Ferro Rods/Sparking devices.  Ferro rods are among this most reliable of all the means of creating fire. It has a large disadvantage. It only produces a spark. If you want to create a fire lay with only a Ferro rod you need a properly prepared tinder bundle. Anyone in the outdoors will tell you that having dry properly prepared tinder is not always easy.

Commercial Available Tinder. Tinder is commercially available everywhere. You can spend as much or as little as you like. The combination of cotton balls and vaseline is one of the best tinders that you can carry with you. The cotton catching even a spark easily but, the vaseline being petroleum based acts like a flame extender. Other commercially available tinder is basically the same principle.

Incorporating any of these means of making fire into your everyday carry can give you a leg up on many other people when and if a survival situation presents itself. Other items like a paracord bracelet with a Ferro rod buckle and Ferro rod tipped boot laces are items that you can incorporate into your wardrobe. These items do not take up a lot of extra room and will serve you well.
